Pooldex

About us

Pooldex is a small independent project: a free website with pool and hot tub calculators, and an iPhone app built on the same formulas. We don't sell pool chemicals, and no brand pays us.

Who we are

Pooldex is built by an independent developer, who also writes and checks every page:

Aliaksandr Rusinski

Creator of Pooldex

We started it because the answers to simple questions like "how much chlorine do I add" disagree from site to site, and most pool apps are made by chemical brands that want you to buy their products.

We are not a pool store, and we don't claim to be pool professionals. Instead, we show our work: every formula, constant, and source is published on the methodology page, and each calculator is checked against independent references such as the Taylor K-1005 treatment tables, PHTA fact sheets, and the CDC's Model Aquatic Health Code.

Our rules

  • Brand-neutral. Doses are based on the active ingredient and the percent on your label, not on a brand. When we name a brand (for example, "Intex 18 ft × 48 in"), it is only to identify a product.
  • Formulas published. The site and the app share one chemistry engine with 67 reference test cases. If a formula changes, the engine version and the change log on the methodology page change with it, and every page shows the date the formulas last changed.
  • Honest limits. Test strips read in steps, pH models ignore CO2 loss over time, and the product label always takes priority over our numbers. We say so on the pages where it matters.
  • No fake reviews, no invented numbers. Where we could not confirm something, we say so. Quotes from other sources are short and linked.
  • Safety over speed. Big corrections are split into steps, and we show "Don't swim yet" when chlorine or pH is out of range.

How the site makes money

Right now the site has no ads and no affiliate links. We plan to fund it through the Pooldex app (free today, with an optional paid upgrade planned for a later version) and, later, through ads and affiliate links. When that happens, ads will never sit above a calculator or its result, affiliate links will be labeled next to where they appear, and product recommendations will never be built into a calculator result. See the app page for what the app does.

Editorial and review process

  1. Every number on a page is produced by the chemistry engine, not typed by hand. The build stops if any of the engine's reference tests fail.
  2. Pages cite primary sources: CDC, PHTA, Taylor Technologies, EPA product labels, and equipment manuals. We use forum and blog sources only as secondary sources and mark them as such.
  3. Each page shows who wrote it and the date it was published or last updated. We change that date only when the content or numbers actually change.
  4. Pages about acid, chlorine, shock, and chemical safety are the ones where a mistake can hurt someone. When an independent expert reviews one of them, the page names the reviewer and the date.
  5. If you find an error, tell us. We will fix it and note the correction.
